nikka yoichi 15

Nikka’s Yoichi single malt is a product of the Yoichi distillery, which was founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934.

Taketsuru chose to build the distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido due to its environmental conditions being similar to Scotland, where he learned the art of whisky making.

The single malt boasts peaty notes and smokiness resulting from traditional direct coal-fired distillation, as well as a briny hint derived from the aging process and sea breeze.

The Yoichi distillery is situated in the small coastal fishing town of Yoichi on Hokkaido Island, which has a climate resembling that of Scotland.

The distillery is located to the west of Sapporo and is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with the sea bordering the fourth.

Hokkaido is unique in having local access to peat, which was initially sourced from local peat bogs and gave Yoichi’s whisky its distinctive and subtle smoky character.

However, most of the peated malted barley now used for production is imported from Scotland. Coupled with the distillery’s proximity to the ocean, peat leaves a lasting impression on Yoichi’s products, imparting a salty and smoky character akin to Islay’s famous Scottish malts.

Yoichi still uses coal-fired stills, which are no longer present at any Scottish distillery, adding a unique flavor to the whisky and paying homage to its heritage.

Masataka Taketsuru is regarded as the father of Japanese whisky, hailing from a family of sake brewers whose business dates back to 1733.

Taketsuru was taught from an early age that sake-making was a painstakingly meticulous art and took this lesson to heart, training as a chemist and preparing to carry on his family’s trade.

However, it was Scotch whisky that captured his imagination, and he devoted his life to it. He travelled to Scotland in 1918, where he learned the secrets of whisky-making and met his wife, Rita, who became a source of inspiration for him.
